QUERCUS ACUTISSIMA – OAK, SAWTOOTH

QUERCUS ACUTISSIMA – OAK, SAWTOOTH

Sawtooth Oak prefers a well-drained, acid soil but will adapt to most soils except highly alkaline. Chlorosis due to micronutrient-deficiency occurs on high pH soil. Although this can be temporarily corrected to a certain extent with remedial fertilizer treatments, it is best to plant a tree tolerant of alkaline soil when the pH at the planting site is above 7.2. Irrigation helps trees become established but once established, they grow very fast without irrigation. As it ages, it grows into a broad, rounded canopy that could make it useful as a shade tree, street or parking lot tree or a lawn tree specimen. This is one of the fastest growing oaks in North America and has done well in as far south as zone 8A in the southeastern US. Wood is considered ring porous to semi-ring porous.
