PICEA GLAUCA – SPRUCE, WHITE

PICEA GLAUCA – SPRUCE, WHITE

Most often found on stream banks and lake shores in nature, White Spruce should be grown in the landscape on moist or dry soils in full sun or partial shade. Trees which are well-established are quite tolerant of snow, ice, wind, heat, cold, and drought but can also tolerate wet soil for a period of time. In its natural habitat, trees will develop an adventurous root system as the original root system is buried by alluvial soil. However, do not take this as license to plant the tree too deep. It tolerates high soil salt concentrations originating from de-icing salt applications better than many other plants. Good survival in ice storms. This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.

The variety densa is the state tree of South Dakota.
