Cremation: An Urn Isn’t Your Only Option

We’ve been serving New York families for well over 150 years here at The Woodlawn Cemetery, and if there’s one thing we realize our community wants it’s this: options. That’s why our professional staff has and always will design our services around you and your needs. That’s also why, as cremation rates hit an all-time high in our area, we want to provide as many choices for permanent memorialization as possible.

Many families select an urn with a traditional burial in mind, while others reserve a small portion of cremated remains as a keepsake and place the remaining portion in a memorial niche. Doing so leaves behind a special place where the next generation can visit to learn about, remember, and honor the memories of that special person.

Keep in mind, however, that an urn isn’t the only option when it comes to memorializing your loved one.

Consider the following:

  • Keepsake Jewelry

Our emotional attachment to our loved ones does not disappear when they’re no longer with us. Keepsake jewelry allows you to express your devotion to your friend or family member while carrying part of them with you at all times. From rings to necklaces, bracelets to lockets, keychains to rearview mirror memorial ornaments, you will be amazed by the variety of beautiful options. Over the years, we’ve talked with far too many families who regret letting go of all their loved one’s cremated remains. Keepsake jewelry is a tangible way to keep their memory alive for years to come.

  • Scattering

If you prefer to scatter the cremated remains, there are traditional and creative options. Here at Woodlawn, cremated remains may be scattered in a communal receptacle known as an ossuary within our beautiful Brookside Cremation Garden. A bronze name plaque placed on a wall near the ossuary permanently memorializes the individual. For public or private land scattering, please check with your local towns and cities for updated laws on scattering in these areas.

  • Cremation Monument or Niche

Some families choose a meaningful location for their loved one’s final resting place by erecting a plaque or other memorial at the place where the remains were scattered. Other families opt to preserve a portion of the remains in our glass-front or granite niches. Our columbarium options at Woodlawn provide permanent places for loved ones to pay their respects in a beautiful and serene setting.

Columbarium niches can be personalized with granite, marble, or walnut fronts for beautiful memorial tributes. Granite niches are available in our Garden Conservatory Mausoleum as well as our new Hillcrest Mausoleum Complex and Knollwood Mausoleum. Our glass-front niches, located inside the Garden Conservatory Mausoleum and new Knollwood Mausoleum, allow for beautiful, personalized tributes to a life well lived. By choosing a glass-front niche, families are able to create very meaningful tributes while enjoying a quiet, secure, climate-controlled comfortable atmosphere to pay their respects. Consider our family niches, built to personal specifications to accommodate the cremated remains of one or more family members. We also offer beautiful personalized memorial benches and other unique memorial options.

A visit to Woodlawn is recommended to learn firsthand about the options discussed above, and to see the facilities and the niches available for memorialization. We can help you explore your options and make the arrangements, knowing that this important and personal decision will affect generations to come.
