Q: Why Woodlawn? A: When you make the important decision about a place of interment, you want to choose a place your loved ones will enjoy visiting, with an atmosphere that promotes reflection and solace. Beautiful, well-kept grounds filled with stately trees, winding roads and peaceful lakes all contribute to an atmosphere that speaks as much of life as of death. The Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. It is an collection of art, history and ecology, right in the heart of the metropolis. Its grace and exceptional location have made Woodlawn the choice of thousands of families. Easily reached by car, bus, train for the many generations of families that visit every year. Q: Who can be buried at Woodlawn? A: Woodlawn is a non-sectarian cemetery. That means that Woodlawn is open to all religious faiths and all walks of life. Our focus is honoring the legacy of those in our care. Q: How big is Woodlawn? A: Woodlawn covers 400 acres of land in the northern section of the Bronx. We were incorporated in 1863 by a special act of the NY State Legislature. Woodlawn is a not-for-profit cemetery corporation. Q: When is Woodlawn open? A: Woodlawn is open 365 days a year for visitation. Our Administrative Office is open Monday through Saturday and on some Holiday weekends. Please see Visiting Woodlawn for complete details. Q: What if I am visiting when the office is not open? A: Woodlawn has a full time security team. They are present at the cemetery 24 hours a day. On days when the Administration Office is closed, our security team will assist you in getting to your families lot, crypt or niche. They routinely patrol the cemetery to insure a safe environment for anyone visiting Woodlawn. Q: How do I get to Woodlawn? A: Our main entrance is located at East 233rd Street and Webster Avenue in the Bronx. We are accessible by car from the Bronx River Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. You can also get to Woodlawn via mass transit by taking the Harlem Line of Metro North Railroad or by the Lexington Avenue #4 Train. For complete directions, please see Visiting Woodlawn. Q: What facilities does Woodlawn have? A: Even though Woodlawn is over 140 years old, we still have a lot of space available to serve any families needs. We have traditional in-ground burial spaces, private mausoleum and family estate lots, above-ground community mausoleums and many options for people who choose cremation. Q: When families purchase memorial property, do they own the land? A: Unlike buying a piece of real estate, when you purchase memorial property, you purchase the right of interment in the lot, crypt or niche that is purchased. For more information on ownership rights, please see Ownership Guidelines in the Lot Owners Services. Q: Does the cemetery remove remains after a certain amount of years? A: No, unlike some European traditions, when families purchase memorial property, they purchase the forever right of interment. Q: Can you purchase memorial property before you need it? A: Yes, and Woodlawn highly recommends that families choose to pre-plan. There are many advantages, including peace of mind and saving money. Q: How many people can be buried in one space? A: It depends on the kind of space you choose, but it could be one, two, three or four people per space. Q: How do I purchase? A: The best way is to visit Woodlawn so one of our experienced Family Service Counselors can give you a tour and explain all the different options. If you are unable to do this, a Counselor would come to your home and explain the property and services we offer. Q: How much does it cost? This is a very difficult question to answer. The cost really depends on what type of property and services chosen. There are a number of different options that affect the cost and we hope that you will visit so we can show you these options. Q: Can Woodlawn do complete cremation arrangements? A: No, even though Woodlawn has a crematory, we are not allowed to pick up the deceased or file any death certificates or burial-transit permits. Even if your family chooses cremation, you will need a licensed funeral director to assist. Q: Do I need a funeral director for burial? A: Yes, NY State Law requires a licensed funeral director perform services to prepare and transport the deceased. Q: Does Woodlawn have a chapel for services? A: Yes, Woodlawn has the beautiful Woolworth Chapel located near our Jerome Avenue entrance. The Chapel, built in 1935, can seat up to 100 people and is available to families on a pre-reserved basis. For complete information, contact admin@thewoodlawncemetery.org. Q: Does Woodlawn sell monuments or do monument inscriptions? A: No, under NY State Law, cemeteries are not allowed to sell granite memorials or sell the inscription service on a family headstone.
