WOODLAWN takes pride in maintaining our grounds to the highest standards possible. General Maintenance of Woodlawn includes regular mowing and trimming of the grass, filling holes from previous interments, tree care and leaf mulching/removal.

The families who own the individual lots are responsible for the care of any monuments or markers on the lot and the care of bushes.  Refer to the section Rules & Regulations of The Woodlawn Cemetery  for complete details.  Some families ask Woodlawn to care for these items as well. There are some lots where the family wishes to have additional or special care of the lot. This may include higher care of the grass or annual planting of a flower border at the monument or pruning of the bushes.

Woodlawn has two programs available for families to receive this special care of their lot, memorials or private mausoleums.

Annual Care

This program sets up an annual agreement for Woodlawn to do specific tasks and the family pays for these services annually. The family is billed sometime during the year, either at the beginning of the growing season or on the anniversary of the agreement.

An example of the service would be if your family wanted a Begonia border at the monument during the growing season. This includes preparing the bed, planting the flowers, care of the flowers, including watering and weeding, if necessary and removing the flowers at the end of the growing season. To set up this arrangement, you would contact our Administration Department and request an estimate for this work. Upon receiving the estimate you would chose the services desired and pay the fees due at this time. Then the following year, we would bill you for the next year.

The charges for Annual Care are reviewed annually and may increase in price without notice. These prices are subject to the approval of the NYS Cemetery Board. Please always check with our Administration Department for the most current price information.

Endowments

Rather than paying annually for services, while ensuring the continued care of the lot, your family could set up an Endowment with Woodlawn. Thousands of families have chosen to do this to avoid the burden for future generations.

The Endowment is a trust account set up by Woodlawn specifically for your lot to earn an annual amount of interest income that will be used by Woodlawn to perform the services you selected.

If your family is interested in an Endowment, contact our Administrate Office. The first thing we will do is an assessment of the lot. Woodlawn personnel will go to the lot, review its condition and determine the services we can perform. This may include reseeding or sodding the grass on the lot, or planting a monument border or bushes. The assessment is returned to our Administration Department where it is priced and then a written estimate of potential services is sent to the family representative.

The family then returns the authorization form with endowment funds and we set up the account and start performing the work. Annually Woodlawn will review the lot and automatically perform the necessary work. Thereby, an endowment will ensure the continued long-term care of the property.

The services offered, both annually and by endowment, are as follows:

Annual Care/Endowment Services

PRICES AND SERVICES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE. PLEASE CONTACT OUR ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT FOR A CURRENT ESTIMATE FOR SERVICES DESIRED.

Following are the Services relating to special care for lots, monuments and private mausoleums in Woodlawn. These prices are based on the number of hours and amount of materials it takes to perform these services. Also, some of the services may only apply to one-time charge for the service, or it may be something we can perform year after year. The latter may be purchased by setting up Annual Care Billing or by establishing an Endowment.

  • Annual Care Billing: The family is billed annually for the charges to perform specific special care; for example, Woodlawn may plant a begonia border and care for it yearly. The charge for this, which may go up annually as approved by the Cemetery Board, would be billed annually. If the family stopped paying for this service at any time, Woodlawn would stop the service.
  • Endowment: The family would establish an endowment, calculated at the cost of performing the work annually capitalized by a rate of return on Woodlawn’s investment. This format would allow Woodlawn to perform the work for a longterm period; thereby insuring the family and the lot would be tended to. If the work is to take place only once in a set number of years, the endowment is
calculated for the total amount needed to cover cost annually then divided by the interval number of years the services will be completed (i.e., Cleaning of Exterior (Every 5 years): $10,000 Endowment /5 = $2,000 fund created).
  • One-time services: These are services, such as re-grade and sod of a lot, which are specific project charges and an endowment would not be established for this particular service. The long term care of the sod would then fall into the Annual Care or Endowment.
  • Endowment Eligible: This is the term we are establishing to define a service or project that may be folded into an endowment.
